CARTOONING CLASSES

Cartooning classes offer the chance to discover the fun of creating your own cartoon characters and funny situations together with the enjoyment of using them in gag cartoons, comic strips, comic books and humourous illustration. Other fun activities may include bookmarks, pop-up cards, caricature, and 3D figures. Students also have the opportunity to work with a variety of materials which can include lead and coloured pencil, pen and ink, felt pens, acrylic paints, water colours and clay.
Student regularly receive handouts - notes to reinforce the concepts and skills learnt in classes.

ART CLASSES

Art classes provide the opportunity to create interesting and fun art works using a wide variety of techniques. Activities aim to develop perception, creativity, fine and gross motor skills and confidence in self expression as well as an understanding and enjoyment of famous artists and their work. Areas covered include drawing, painting, illustration, sculpture, crafts and printing. Materials used include lead and coloured pencils, charcoal, pen and ink, acrylic paint, water colours, clay and paper mache. Classes are held in four different locations in Adelaide, South Australia. They are aimed at children 7-12 years and are of 90 mins duration. Conatct me for more details.

SCHOOL WORKSHOPS

School and library workshops are aimed at students learning just how easy it is to draw their own cartoon characters. Each one hour session is designed to introduce children to the tricks of the trade and to build confidence. They will be given the opportunity to discover their individual abilities using this universally loved art form. The workshops are hands on. After a short introduction to what I do as a cartoonist, students are quided through the steps to create their own cartoon characters. They are then given a project which extends this knowledge and also aims to develop their creative/lateral thinking.

PHILOSOPHY

I have worked as a professional cartoonist/illustrator for twenty years (over ten years full-time) and have exhibited my work in South Australia as well as having cartoons published in local, national and international magazines and newspapers. I trained at the South Australian School of Art and have had over 20 years experience teaching children art. The aim of my classes is not always to produce finished 'master pieces' fit to be framed and hung on the wall - although this can happen. I believe that, in art, it is important for children to feel free to experiment and be creative without the fear of making mistakes or spoiling their work. I endeavour to strike a balance by teaching certain skills, techniques etc. and within broad guildines, give children the opportunity to exercise their own creativity in applying these. Without some form of 'teaching' progress would be limited, but at the same time I want children to understand that there is not just one answer when it comes to artistic expression. I hope to develop children's confidence in their own expression as well as allowing them to develop their own unique style.
